MEET Our AUSTRian PRODUCERS

EBNER-EBENAUER

POYSDORF WEINVIERTEL

Meet Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer, an award-winning duo at the helm of Ebner-Ebenauer, nestled in Austria's Weinviertel. Famed for their diverse range of wines crafted from ancient vines spanning a 20-hectare estate, their commitment to spontaneous fermentation, and painstaking manual harvesting techniques, the couple has secured the title 'Winemakers of the Year 2022' by Falstaff.

"The vineyards of the Ebner-Ebenauer estate are distributed in a star shape around Poysdorf with a wide range of different terroirs. The winemaking couple have vines of above-average age, a factor that contributes significantly to the complexity of their wines. A total of 38 vineyards are cultivated, with grapes from each parcel being vinified separately. Manfred Ebenauer relies on spontaneous fermentation and gives his wines plenty of time and rest. In his 400-year-old winery, there are no pumps or technical gadgets. His top quality grapes are all harvested by hand, and so the wines are given all the time they need to develop to their full potential." -Peter Moser; “It is THE Burgundy winery in Austria for me. The wines are confidential, mineral, full of resilience, enormously salty, racy, steely and dry." Adi Schmid - Restaurant Steirereck

WACHTER-WIESLER

Deutsch Schützen

Christoph Wachter began working at his family winery in 2008 when he was just 20 years old. He took over full responsibility in 2010, and now organically farms 14 hectares of vineyards in Südburgenland, in the towns of Eisenberg and Deutsch Schützen.  The most prized terroir is the green schist of the Eisenberg hill, regarded as one of the finest sites for producing Blaufränkisch in Austria, producing wines of great finesse and focus. Deutsch-Schützen’s soils are denser with a deeper layer of loam, resulting in darker spicier wines with softer tannins.  Christoph only uses native yeasts and the wines are aged in large barrels so as not to obscure them with oak. The resulting wines are incredibly elegant, expressive, superlative expressions of Blaufränkisch that age well, though are incredibly approachable and pleasurable when young. The Wachter-Wiesler wines always have a characteristic silky texture, floral aromatics, elegance, minerality and bright acidity.

“Thanks to the dynamism of a handful of great producers, (Blaufränkisch) is finally getting the dignity it deserves. And Wachter-Wiesler is leading the way.” - Michelle Bouffard (Quench Magazine)
